Résumé
The purpose of this article is to discuss the resources, which may be those of the ethical practice of patience, related to the type of hypermodern universe both accelerated and liquefied, described respectively and from a critical perspective by Harmut Rosa and Zygmunt Bauman. The respective theoretical propositions are succinctly presented, as well as the stakes inherent to the temporal dimension of autonomy in such a context. Then we examine and discuss ethically the typical attitudes of two figures of a human world perceived as accelerating and increasingly liquefying, namely those who surf and those who sink. Building on this foundation allows us to enter into a criticism of patience, with the aim of showing both the conceptual boundaries in which we place it and its practical potential in today’s world. A third social form, namely the individual capable, if necessary, to navigate, that is, to delay when he cannot evolve adequately in such a world, is then sketched out. Finally, we argue that thinking and even developing such a capacity for patience is part of the conditions of opportunity for a lucid understanding of the human-social phenomenon.
