Résumé
This research is a theoretically informed ethnography of a cabinetmakers in French-speaking Switzerland. Its main contribution is the definition of an ethics of humbleness as an ideal type that allows us to understand the construction of a political imaginary whose effects can be observed in the craft practice and professional culture, including the social and sensory dispositions of artisans.
By differentiating itself from the double hegemony of their French- and German-speaking neighbours, the cabinetmakers of French-speaking Switzerland are part of a very specific political imagination, whose presuppositions can be grasped through the notion of an "imagined community''. However, this imaginary also takes material shape in their sensory experiences: in the places (workshops and workbench.es) and in the use of tools and/or machines.
At the crossroads of the sociology of work and the anthropology of techniques, I demonstrate that it is possible to analyse a professional identity through the sensory experiences and the relationship to materialities of its members. This materialistic and sensory commitment allowed me to make an original contribution highlighting the role of ethics and values in professional practice.

Cette recherche est une ethnographie théoriquement fondée des ébénistes de Suisse romande. Sa principale contribution est la définition d'une éthique de la modestie comme idéal type permettant de comprendre la construction d'un imaginaire politique dont les effets peuvent être observés dans la pratique artisanale et la culture professionnelle, incluant les dispositions sociales et sensorielles des attisan.e.s.
En se différenciant de la double hégémonie de leurs voisin.e.s français.e.s et germanophones, les ébénistes de Suisse romande s'inscrivent dans un imaginaire politique très spécifique, dont les présupposés peuvent être saisis à travers la notion de "communauté imaginée". Mais cet imaginaire se matérialise aussi dans leurs expériences sensorielles : dans les lieux (ateliers et établis) et dans l'utilisation d'outils et/ ou de machines.
Au croisement de la sociologie du travail et de l'anthropologie des techniques, je démontre qu'il est possible d'analyser une identité professionnelle à travers les expériences sensorielles et le rapport à la matérialité de ses membres. Cet engagement matérialiste et sensoriel m'a permis d'apporter une contribution originale mettant aussi en évidence le rôle de l'éthique et des valeurs dans la pratique professionnelle
